B1G Power Rankings – Week of 10/7

8 Oct

Throughout the 2013 season, I’ll be ranking the Big Ten schools 1-12.  Click here to see where your team was ranked last week.

Prepare to disagree…

  1. Ohio State.  The Buckeyes have the best record (6-0) and the most impressive resume.  They get a well deserved week off.
  2. Michigan.  The Wolverines are also undefeated and did what top flight teams should do:  quickly and easily dispatched a lesser opponent.
  3. Wisconsin.  A very interesting match up with Northwestern this week.  Gotta like Wisky’s chances with two weeks to prepare.
  4. Michigan State.  A fun test with the conference’s best defense going up against one of the best offenses in the league.  My guess is if Michigan State can score 26 points again, they’ll be just fine
  5. Nebraska.  Are the Blackshirts improving or was Illinois’s 40 ppg offensive prowess nothing but smoke and mirrors?  Beats me.  Let’s just watch Kenny Bell’s catch again.

Memo to Tommy Armstrong: The afro makes Kenny Bell appear taller than he really is.

  6. Northwestern.  A tough loss that was closer than the final score indicated.  The Wildcats must rally against Wisconsin to avoid an 0-2 start in conference.
  7. Indiana.  That romp over Penn State will open some eyes.  This week’s game against Michigan State will help decide if the Hoosiers are a legitimate threat.
  8. Iowa.  They hung in against the Spartans, but couldn’t get it done.  The Hawkeyes now get two weeks to prep for Ohio State.  They’ll need it.
  9. Penn State.  I expected a better showing (if not a win) against the Hoosiers.  I do not have those same expectations with Michigan coming up.
  10. Illinois.  Not sure why the Illini didn’t try to run Nathan Scheelhaase more against a soft Nebraska defense on a day with a swirling 30 mph wind.  It might have made that game more competitive.
  11. Purdue.  This week is a big opportunity for the Boilermakers.  Nebraska plays their first road game with (likely) a freshman QB under center.  Purdue gets two weeks to identify all of the weak spots in the Blackshirt defense.  Can they take advantage?
  12. Minnesota.  Two big concerns:  1) Jerry Kill’s health.  2) Can they win again before they play Penn State?
