Thought of the Day – 2/17/12

17 Feb

You often hear the phrase “They don’t build ’em like that anymore” used in reference to cars, houses, or appliances, or anything else that fails, breaks, or falls apart in less than 40 years.

But why is that?

In an age with more technology, more know-how, and more information available to almost anyone, shouldn’t everything be built better/smarter/stronger than it was 5, 10, or 100 years ago?

In one sense, yes, you are right. But in today’s throwaway society, companies producing goods don’t take the pride in the quality of workmanship that craftsman once did. I think that’s the idea behind the adage. That’s how I take it, anyway.

Almost everything could be and should be made better, but companies prefer cheaper – saves them money to make it and brings the customers back for a repeat purchase when it breaks.

What do you think?
